Children at Shanti Bhawan

Ladies Circle No.2 has been working with Shanti Bhawan at the Stella Maris College for more than three decades. Stella Maris is one of the premier schools for girls in Chennai and Shanti Bhawan is a social welfare center under the college administration. It was started in 1954 at Mylapore by Sr.Thecia Camacho, also known as Mother Eanswida, to help the people of nearby slums. The motto of the center is to work towards the development of economically backward people of the locality. The center  runs a day care center and has around 90 children registered with them. Every year, the Ladies Circle has sponsored 24 children at a cost of Rs 96000. This funding is coming from a Dutch twining project.

Towards a total development of each child

A Health clinic functions twice a week to enable medical examinations, immunisation and periodical check ups and treatment of minor ailments. Shanti Bhawan also helps nearly 250 school children to complete their education. Through its Tailoring Unit Shanthi Bhawan offers a course in cutting, sewing and embroidery to teenage girls, after which they can appear for a Government Technical Examination and attain a Diploma in the same course. A few economically weak girls are also taught to make jute bags, wall hangings, etc so that they make a living.
